How High Should a Pendant Light Hang Above a Dining Table?

Getting pendant light height right is the difference between a dining room that feels pulled together and one that feels off — even if you can't quite explain why.
The Standard Rule Hang the bottom of your pendant 30–36 inches above the tabletop. This puts the light low enough to create intimacy and illuminate the table, without blocking sightlines across it.
Adjust for Ceiling Height
- 8 ft ceiling → aim for 30–32 inches above the table
- 9 ft ceiling → 32–34 inches works well
- 10 ft ceiling or higher → you can go up to 36 inches, or use a longer cord/rod to bring the light closer
Multiple Pendants Over One Table If you're hanging 2–3 pendants in a row, keep the same drop height for all of them and space them evenly — roughly 24 inches apart and centered over the table length.
Shade Size Matters A shade wider than 12 inches needs more clearance. Narrow cylindrical pendants can hang slightly lower; wide drum shades should stay at the higher end of the range.
Quick Test Sit at the table. You should be able to see the faces of everyone across from you without the shade in the way. If you can't, raise it an inch or two.
